Watershed management
At the North Hungarian Water Directorate the Water Management Department is responsible for the available water resources. (surface water, underground water). The water resources management doesn't only mean the distribution of the waters between users but it also means the management of the available water resources from ecological, natural and social point of view. In Hungary we divide the water resources into two parts. The first part is the surface water; the second is the underground water.
- still water: natural lakes, oxbow lakes, inland watered areas, artificial lakes, reservoirs, mine lakes
- watercourses: streams, rivers, creeks, temporary watercourses
- canals: inland water canals, rainwater canals, drainage and irrigation canals Underground waters
Underground Waters
- subsoil waters
- soilwaters: cold soilwaters, warm soilwaters (thermal and curative waters)
- carst and slot waters: cold cars waters, warm cars waters (thermal and curative waters
In connection of watershed management we are interested in the waters owned by the government and water establishments. During our work we take into consideration the EU WDF. The integrated water management's substance is to coordinate the process of the activities, the water demands, the water resources and the hydrology. The crossboarder cooperaions is the most impor?tant thing of the water resources management. That's the reason why the Department of the Water Management takes part in the watershed management planning. To recognize the water status we have to measure the properties of it and work with the results. This activity is the hydrograpy.
For example here are some of the used data:
hydrometerological data, water levels, waterflow data, water temperature, water quantity and quality and so on. The data that we use and process is public so everyone can reach them. At the directorate we are responsible for the followings:
pieces | capacity [million m3] | Water surface [hectare] | |
Reservoirs | 86 | 54.8 | 2010.7 |
Fish lakes and lake systems | 11 | 1.87 | 172.8 |
Ponds | 25 | 0.73 | 43.7 |
Planned ponds | 33 | 1.08 | 35.04 |
The activities of the Department of Environment and Public Utilities:
This department includes two groups:
- Environment and Public Utilities Expert and Planning Group
- Waste Management and Project Preparation Group
The special fields of the Environment and Public Utilities Expert and Planning are the planned and operating industrial and municipal watersupply, the sewerage and purification systems. This group makes the registration of the sewered areas, makes reports of these territories and send these reports to the Environment and Water Ministry. They contribute to the regional and national programs of sewerage systems, sewerage treatment and disposal. They've done important things to make the national database of the sewerage management. In the future they will examine the wastewater treatment plants because they are asked by the Ministry.
